What should the compression be in a 74B engine? It is an "L" engine which I always assumed had less compression thatn an "H" engine. I have one of those hand held compression jobbies that screws in the spark plug hole and has a guage with a pressure release button on it. It seemed to work well. A compression test will tell you if your engine has good compression. An engine is essentially a self-powered air pump, so it needs good compression to run efficiently, cleanly and to start easily. As a rule, most engines should have 140 to 160 lbs of cranking compression with no more than 10% difference between any of the cylinders. I ran a compression test on my 1977 MG Midget.
